On January 8, 2006, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will raise the cost of stamps from 37 cents to 39 cents for a one-ounce letter. But the USPS is considering the inclusion of a "Forever" stamp which could be used regardless of future postage increases.
Consumers (sorry, not available to direct marketers) could stockpile "Forever" stamps for future use and not worry about them ever expiring.
Good idea.
The idea of a "Forever" stamp would also benefit the USPS. Clerks wouldn't be bombarded at the counter every time the rate for stamps increased.
Of course, there'd also be a public relations advantage. Few announcements are less desirable to make than a company announcing that its raising prices. The "Forever" stamp would offset the blow of each future announcement by encouraging consumers to stock up on the postage sans an expiration date.
Let’s face it. The Postal Service has long been viewed as a government-controlled monopoly that doesn't adapt well to the current times. They could use some good PR and the "Forever" stamp would provide that much-needed shot in the arm.
Plus, how cool would it be to see "Forever" stamps purchased this year available in online auctions in 2089?
As eBay-addicts would say, "Buy it now."
